In the words of  Rodd Matsui (Special Effects & Make up Master)

Ricky Dean Logan in a variety of views of the lengthy makeup process he went through for his big scene with none other than Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) in "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare." And as you know, they kept making them afterwards; so someone, like maybe charming and talented director Rachel Talalay, was doing something right.

Ricky Dean Logan (playing "Carlos") had a real job to do for this scene, which took many days (nine or ten!), and I applied many variations of the prosthetic makeup to him, since Freddy's frightful abuse of the character was methodical, detailed and very sequential.

It starts with Freddy shoving a giant cotton swab through Carlos' head through his ears; then Freddy slices off one of Carlos' ears with his knife-glove; and then he throws Carlos through a brick wall into another reality; and that's how the scene BEGINS, folks. It gets progressively more intense and twisted from there, and *only* an actor of Ricky Dean's talent can do such acting out of sequence and maintain character in such a way that the scene will cut together intelligibly in post-production.

The scene is/was a logistical "nightmare," so to speak, complicated and challenging enough to be enjoyable, and even though 1991 was a long long time ago, I look back on this scene and remember a damn fun time making movies. This is still one of the best makeup effects sequences I've ever done, and Ricky Dean is flat-out one of the best actors I've ever had the privilege to work with.

Incredible actor Ricky Dean Logan as "Carlos" in 1991's "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare"... although someone, perhaps director Rachel Talalay, did their job frighteningly well, because this was not the "final" installment in the series. That guy in the background with the coffee is special effects makeup artist Rodd Matsui.

Ricky's big scene with Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund) was fairly complex and required many days of filming (nine or ten, I think!) with a surprising number of variations of his makeup... beginning with an ear getting sliced off, and then it gets weirder and more complicated from there. With so many long days in the makeup chair and on set, Ricky Dean Logan was the very spirit of patience and professional poise--a dream to work with. After the movie hit the theatres, many people I talked to said this was the best scene; the strangest and most intense Freddy sequence. My hat's off to Ricky!
